The One Win Beta Keys
The One entered Blizzard's Cataclysm guild photo contest for a chance to win 10 Cataclysm beta keys and we were successful with the following entry:
A small selection of The One assembled in Hyjal and experimented for ages with getting just the right place and the right poses. I guess it paid off. While Shinytoaster, Foxglove, and I were in Denmark, several One reported they now had Cataclysm beta keys attached to their account.
Popcorn's already been busy posting pictures. It's quite beautiful, especially the new Vashj'ir area, which is all underwater.
The following people were recipients of our first batch of 10 keys:
- Elsheindra
- Foxglove
- Breicor
- Derthon
- Shinytoaster
- Popcorn
- Kariandra
- Shekin
- Sathem
- Novadoll
Keep an eye out on the wiki for more postings with the beta label!

Drachonus Promoted to Officer
I'm pleased to announce that Drachonus has agreed to join The One's officer team. He'll be in charge of 'Knowing Everything' and helping here on the website.
That'll mean some changes to other officer jobs, giving us:
- Dimage - Guild in-game calendar
- Kariandra - Mistress of Initiates
- Popcorn - Social Activities
- Shinytoaster - On the Night Shift and the Guild's Number One
Popcorn and Shinytoaster also double as your local Honourbound Alliance representatives. They're your go-to guys for any questions about Honourbound activities or problems in Honourbound-run events.

The Great One Guild Cataclysm Contest Event
Event: The Great One Guild Cataclysm Event
Date: Monday, July 5th
Time: 20:30 Game Time
As you know, Blizzard has been ramping up, preparing to unleash a Cataclysm upon Azeroth. In both the US and the EU realms, guild leaders can submit a contest entry for their guild to win 10 Cataclysm beta keys. Derthon and I thought it might be cool for The One to enter, mostly because it involves doing things we love to do: being silly and taking pictures of it. How can we lose?
Blizzard said:Guildmasters, it's time to earn you and your guildmates a gaze into the Cataclysm! Gather your friends, head over to your favourite spot and showcase your impressive photography skills. Every week, for five weeks, the 100 most impressive screenshots will earn you and your guild 10 keycodes to access the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Beta!
What are you waiting for? All you need to do is take a screenshot of you and your guild showing off your creativity in terms of breath-taking landscapes, lighting, impressive camera angles and epic poses. The only requirement is that the word "Cataclysm!" is displayed in a chat bubble together with your character and guild names! Please remember that submissions missing the chat bubble and guild name tags will be ineligible to win.
The Guildmaster will then proceed to send us the screenshot and their selection of 10 Battle.net account e-mail addresses using the dedicated webform.
Here is some advice to help you with your submissions:
- Use the environment to your advantage! Points of interest, dungeons, even bosses are there to help you.
- Pimp your screenshot by setting the in-game graphics settings to the max! There is no need to worry about your frame rate since the submission is a still image.
- We strongly encourage you to disable your addons while taking the screenshot. Keep the default interface on and capture your picture of awesomeness!
- Don't forget to read the contest rules
Derthon has picked out some awesome location and {person:Popcorn} will be coordinating costumes. All we need is for you to show up and help us be fantastic!
So, please be online Monday! We'll also be pairing it up with some kind of grand Guild Hide-and-Go-Seek with leaderboards that Popcorn is organizing either before or after this. Details on that will follow in a separate message.
See you there!
Elsheindra

Officer Demotion
I have an unpleasant announcement to make about something that I don't think ever really happened in the guild before. Sonarakbadak, long-time member of The One, was recently demoted from his position as officer (social events) in The One. Sonarakbadak left the guild with his main character, transferring to Horde and another guild, without a word to any of us before or since. While we don't insist that members talk to us before they go, it's nice if you tell us first. As an officer, just transferring or leaving is not acceptable. That's why he was demoted.

The One's Fifth Birthday Bash
On February 25th, the guild will officially have been 5 years in World of Warcraft. To celebrate, Sonarakbadak, social officer, with his capable committee of 'S'-workers, has been working on a special adventure. Fireworks, squirrels, tonks? What will it entail? Nobody knows for sure, but if you're One, then you're definitely invited to participate.
Event: The One's Fifth Birthday Bash
Date: Sunday, February 28th, 2010
Time: 15:00 Game Time
Sonar tells me that you don't need to do anything or bring anything, but I reckon pirate costumes are always good.
Arrrrr! We're One!

Once Again Accepting Applicants
The holiday season is now safely passed. We did accept a number of new people recently, but we still have a few spots left over for additional new members before we hit our limit. So… if you're interested in a guild about to celebrate its 5th birthday (and there will be a party!), who love to dance, and who actually talk about things (sometimes strange things, granted) in guild chat from time to time, consider applying now!

Not Accepting Applications During the Holidays
Thanks for your interest in The One. As we're not having any more guild meetings this year and that's when we initiate people, we're not currently accepting applications. We'll re-open applications some time in January.
See you then! In the meantime, Happy Holidays.
Elsheindra,
Guild Mistress

I am pleased to announce that the mighty dorf Sonarakbadak has once again joined the officer ranks of The One. After last Sunday's Master of Steam, God of Mortar successful event, he's taken over the position of social events officer. Congratulations, Sonar!

- Guild bank: Rianna
- Night shift: Shinytoaster
- Social events: Sonarakbadak
Valetta, our previous sanity officer, and one of the guild's founding members, is away on an extended sabbatical after getting a new, a new baby, a new house, and a new company more or less in one year.

Closures Due to Sites Moving During May
The WoWKindness wiki site (http://www.wowkindness.com/confluence) has been running with a message saying it's closed since the end of April. As you probably know, it's been increasingly unreliable, which I've mostly chalked up to the antiquated hardware and operating system we've been running it on (the server's over 8 years old!)
I'm currently in the progress of moving all of my personal sites, which includes WoWKindness, the THB materials, Eingang.org etc to a new machine running a modern version of Linux. However, this isn't commercially managed hosting, so I need to install and configure everything myself. I did most of everything web-related last month, but I'm still finishing off the e-mail bits (the most complicated part!).
In the meantime, no postings or updates can be made on WoWKindness. We're also not accepting applications. Stay tuned for further announcements!

Honourbound & WoWKindness Content Moves
The Honourbound pages maintained on The One's WoWKindness wiki and the WoWKindness wiki have moved! In an effort to correct the blank pages being removed, the wiki was completely reinstalled with a brand new Tomcat application server engine as per Atlassian's suggestion. As a consequence, one of the things I could now do was configure a transparent proxy between the Tomcat server and the main Apache server for WoWKindness. In English: No more :8080 in all the wiki addresses!
All the important addresses can be found on the THB Guilds, Representatives, and Web Sites page, but I've summarized our common shortcut addresses here:
- Honourbound Information Pages Index: http://www.wowkindness.com/thb/ (or http://www.honourbound.org/thb/)
- Honourbound Leader Forum: http://www.wowkindness.com/lthb/ (or http://www.honourbound.org/lthb/)
- Honourbound GEM Calendar: http://www.wowkindness.com/calendar/ (or http://www.honourbound.org/calendar/
- Honourbound Raid Stats: http://www.wowkindness.com/stats/ (or http://www.honourbound.org/stats/
- The One's Wiki/Forum: http://www.wowkindness.com/wiki/ (or http://www.wowkindness.com/confluence)
The links at the top of all pages have been updated (or should be). There may be things here and there that don't work. I'll address those in time. There's a message posted at the original wiki/forum to direct people here.

Wiki/Dashboard, Forums & THB Leaders Forums Broken
If you're having problems logging in or getting blank pages from the forums, THB Leader Forum, or other parts of the Wiki, it's because there's a technical issue with the caching system for the Wiki. I've filed a support request with Atlassian, the software developer. In the meantime, there's not much I can do about it. I do, however, note that pages refusing to load one minute may load a few minutes later if you attempt to visit them again.

New GEM Release. Everyone Must Update!
There is a new version of the Guild Event Manager (GEM) software that the Honourbound Alliance uses to coordinate shared raid, social, and instance events. The 2.27 release attempts to address the recent lost sends experienced by THB members in both their guild channels and in the shared Honourbound channel, as described in my earlier news posting about New Chat Bug & GEM Problems from October 25th.
The new release attempts to solve the problem by increasing the amount of time GEM must wait between sending messages. Note, these are not the messages you are typing. The mod itself works by sending messages to the Honourbound channel. You don't see these mod messages because your mod filters them out and uses them to update your copy of the GEM events calendar. Due to the way information is shared, it's vitally important that everyone update. People who don't update will still lose information which will result in their copies of the event calendar being wrong and then shared incorrectly with other people, continuing to cause events to disappear or people not to appear signed up, etc.
You can update by downloading a copy from one of the following locations:
- GEM author's home page
- GEM Mod Page on WoWKindness
Update: 2.27 has been replaced by 2.28 as of November 12th.

- Valetta (Sanity Officer)
- Shinytoaster (Night Shift)
- Elsheindra (Mistress of Mayhem)

THB Group/Raid Looting and Participation Rules
As part of the THB's recent raid/group looting rule reform, we agreed to create raiding specification lists for each guild. Inclusion on the list means you've declared to Elsheindra your preferred raiding/group role (healer, tank, caster DPS, etc) and that you've read and agreed to the March 2007 raiding/looting rules so that you understand how that role affects when/where you should be allowed to roll on items in 5-mans and in raids.
You can declare your role and your agreement to the rules on The One's THB Role List and Rule Agreement Signup Page. Elsheindra will then add you. Future THB raid event leaders will set you to "spare/substitute" ('S' instead of 'P' for primary) if you do not appear on this list. This is a direct result of looting agreement problems arising out of Molten Core runs last year and has been agreed to by all participating THB guilds.Quick Links

Guild Character Limit Modification after TBC
For those of you with 3 alts and a main already in The One, the management is pleased to announce you have the opportunity to to add a new Draenei character.
If you hadn't already used up all your character slots in the guild, you can add new Draenei until you reach five characters.
You may not, however, have 5 pre-Burning Crusade characters. This is a bonus to facilitate people having new TBC race characters in the guild.

Modification to Guild Rules for Initiates
With the increase in Honourbound events and an influx of new people, we've made a change to the guild rules for initiates. Initiates will now have restricted access to end-game raid events of more than 10 people in The Honourbound Alliance until either they're promoted to full member or they're given permission by Elsheindra, the guild mistress.
Although we haven't had a problem with this yet, it has occurred with some of the other allied guilds. Initiates are usually people unknown to the guild. When you join an Honourbound event, you're representing The One. Your behaviour reflects back on the guild. When our members sign up for events, we want to be fully confident that they will represent the guild in a positive way, not be a source of problems.

Recent Officer Changes
We've had some promotions and some leavetakings recently, causing our officer roster to change somewhat. First, the bad news. Swiftsong (L60 Hunter), officer and co-founder of the guild, will be taking a leave of absence, due to repetitive stress injury-like symptoms in his arms and wrists. Sonarakbadak (L60 Hunter), officer and beloved drunken dwarf, went on hiatus at the beginning of the summer to train for a competition. Although he's been seen on and off since then, it's been more off than on. We're hopeful he'll come back as he'll be sorely missed.
There is good news, though! We've seen the return of two former officers. Schnurbart (L60 Warrior) is back with more dancing, jumping, and pink gnome cuteness than you thought there could ever be. His return coincided with the return (as an officer) of Valetta (L60 Mage), one of the guild's charter members. For Val, there's no better time than now to be herbaling or house renovating.
Your current officer team is:
- Elsheindra (L60 Druid) as Guild Mistress of Mayhem
- Kariandra (L60 Warrior) as Social Activities Officer
- Schnurbart (L60 Warrior) as Master of Initiates and GIS Activities
- Shinytoaster (L60 Paladin) on the Night Shift
- Valetta (L60 Mage) as Sanity Officer

GEM Calendar on the Web
Elsheindra (Level 60 Druid) maintains a web-based GEM calendar where it's possible to see upcoming events and current signups for The One and the Honourbound Alliance. The web version is updated after Elsheindra logs out of WoW, so it's fairly up-to-date but not guaranteed to be anywhere near real-time. You can see how old it is by checking the "Last updated" date at the bottom of the list of events. The time is listed in Game Time (i.e. WoW server time) as are all the events.
At the moment, you can access the GEM Event Calendar in several ways:
- Using the direct link to the GEM Calendar;
- From the WoW Kindness home page, click the "GEM Calendar" link at the top of the list of questing events on the right-hand side of the page;
- From the WoW Kindness home page, there's a "GEM Calendar" link in the left-hand "Members Only" menu; and
- From any WoWKindness page, click the "QUEST" link at the top of the page and then choose "GEM Calendar" from the "Quick Links" section at the top.

WoW 1.12 Patch Means new CT Raid Assist
The new WoW 1.12 patch means, among other things, a completely new version of CT Raid Assist. The new version will not be backwards compatible with previous versions because it no longer requires a separate, shared raid channel. Download the latest version from our CT Raid Assist page and discuss the 1.12 patch.

Install GEM, GEM Channel Change, & the 1.10 Patch
There are a number of important notices about organizing and participating in various cross-guild raids and smaller guild/cross-guild instance runs. The majority of our organization is being done now using the GEM add-on. The rest of this message covers installation issues, what channel to use, a recent channel change, and how to use GEM with the recent 1.10 Warcraft patch.
All guild members are requested to install the Guild Event Manager (GEM) add-on. This add-on is used to coordinate cross-guild raids and guild/cross-guild 5-man instance adventures. GEM info page has a link to download the latest version of the mod, plus instructions on how to configure it properly (with pictures). As some of the information is restricted (channel name/password), please be sure to login first . The channel name/password are also in our "Guild Info Panel" in the game. If you have any questions, add a comment to the bottom of the GEM info page or ask on the Guild Channel.
The latest version of GEM (2.07) does work with the latest World of Warcraft 1.10 patch. However, you will need to click the "AddOns" button on your character selection screen, just before choosing your character. The "AddOns" button is in the lower lefthand corner. Once in the AddOns screen, tick the checkbox that says, "Load out of date AddOns". This will activate GEM.
If you've previously installed GEM are are subscribed to the "gemtor" channel, that's no longer in use. We've joined a larger cross-guild alliance, the Honourbound Alliance, and there's a new GEM channel which has a password. Check the guild info panel in-game for the channel name/password or our own GEM info page. Make sure you log in first, though, as the channel name/password will be hidden otherwise.
Once you know the new channel name/password, simply bring up the "Options" tab of GEM, type in the new channel name (case-sensitive) and the new password (case-sensitive) and click "Accept". By case-sensitive, I mean you need to type the channel name and password exactly as they appear. So if the password is "IAM that EIN", you need to type it in with all the same capital letters, i.e. "IAM" and not "iam", and all the same lowercase letters, i.e. "that" and not "THAT". If you have problems, ask in the guild channel.

Wiki/Forum License Extended
The fine folks at Atlassian have graciously extended our initial free one-year maintenance contract for Confluence, our Wiki/Forum software we're using. We have a perpetual free license as a non-profit organization and an additional year of free support. Thanks a lot, Atlassian.
PS: Atlassian also make the very fine Jira bug/issue tracking software. While it's more expensive than Bugzilla, it's something you can train your clients and non-technical in-house staff to use on big projects. Give it a whirl. We're quite happy with it.

Guild Group Chat
Late last month, I added a new Java-based IRC applet to our guild web site that will allow groups of us to gather together in a channel and chatter when we're outside WoW. Find it by logging in to the Guild web site and then looking up in the corner where the "login" link and the link to your name/profile normally appears. You will need a web browser with a recent Java plug-in installed. It should work for most people with Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

Screenshots
We're going to be changing how we're handling Screenshots. Previously, you put them onto a special Screenshots page inside the PROFILE area. With new improvements to the Wiki software, especially the ability to "tag" or "label" things, that's not necessary anymore. New pictures should be added to the Forum area:
- Go to the FORUM area.
- Choose "Add News" from the righthand corner.
- Type in a title describing the event or whatever associated with the picture(s).
- Use the following macro in the body of your message to show all the pictures attached to your posting: {gallery:columns=2}
- At the bottom of the message window, there's an area labelled "Labels" with a link to "Edit" it beside it. Click that and add the label "pictures" to it.
- Save the message.
- Click the "Attachments" tab and upload your pictures.
They should now appear in the forum, where people can easily see them as new and comment on them. The label of "pictures" also allows us to easily find and aggregate all the pictures without them all being on the same page.
If you need help or if you have questions, please ask one of the Officers. They should be able to help you. The previous screenshots section will be closed to new content.

Guild Instances Cancelled Wednesday Jan 11, 2006
Thunderhorn will go down for maintenance @ 03:00 Game Time Wednesday morning and not come back until Thursday morning. According to Blizzard Forums, Thunderhorn and 16 other realms are being taken offline "for safety" while 8 realms are moved to a new data centre. As compensation, we get 4 free days.
Unfortunately, that does mean Wednesday's guild instance events to Blackrock Depths and Stockades are cancelled.

Wiki Closure
The Wiki is closed for at least a few days while we try to finish upgrading to the newest version of the Wiki software and solve some database problems that are still plaguing us after a problem in May.
Sorry about that, but it's better to get it fixed sooner, especially if heroic measures are needed. We still have all the content and, with luck, we'll keep it. Atlassian (the Wiki developer company) is giving us a hand. More info later!

Wiki Address Change
You can now access the Wiki at http://www.wowkindness.com:8080/confluence/ instead of http://ein.transcena.com:8080/confluence/ Hurrah!
Other Changes:
Next month I'll be upgrading the Wiki software to the latest version which had several improvements in how things are laid out (menus) and how much control I'll have.
Maybe also next month: I've been planning on adding some drop-down menus across the top for commonly accessed pages, but I was going to do it in a cool, JavaScript-less way. I'll maybe have time to tackle that next month as well.

Your friendly neighbourhood One officers are: Swiftsong, Valetta, and, our newest, Schnurbart (controlled by iSquirrelyRage???).
Your veteran crew of One members are: Shalia (of the roguish ways), Dimage (with the ever-hungry Saga), and Zam (the dancing, jumping, frost-throwing gnome).
If you're looking to organize an adventure or need help promoting an activity, feel free to contact any of these people. They're skilled at going where no Squirrel has gone before!

- April 29th's Meeting Notes. Valetta's recently added a comment about revising the process for new initiates, including an application form.

This week's guild meeting will be at 21:00 CET (Game Time) instead of 20:00 (CET). We'll be meeting in the usual place: the Bank in Stormwind. Come along and bring your extra items you'd like to give away! Leather patches, enchantments, potions, etc!
Last week's meeting introduced the new "The Chosen One" program in the Guild and asked you to think about possible Guild fun events. This week, we'll also talk about fun events and generating gold for guild members for mounts, items, etc.

Wednesdays Are Alt. Character Night
Have a low-level alternate character hanging around? The One is proud to announce that Wednesday evenings are now alternate character night on WoW. There's no specific time. Just fire up that low-level character and go questing with a new group of people from the Guild. You don't have an alternate character? Feel free to create one and then ask one of the Guild Officers to invite your alternate into the guild. Note: you do need to be logged in as the alternate character to be invited.
PS: If you're creating a new character, rogues, priests, druids, warlocks, and mages are in short supply in the Guild. (-:

Guild Meeting and Swap Meet
It's Friday! At 20:00 (CET), we'll be having our weekly meeting and swap meet at the Bank in Stormwind. All guild members are expected and encouraged to attend. A swap meet's a good opportunity to meet your fellow guildmates, get free potions/armour/etc for yourself, plus sometimes items to give away as Random Acts of Kindness.
Usually one or more of the Guild's enchanters will be around to offer out enchantments. It helps if you bring green or better items to donate to the enchanter, because in order to get materials for enchanting, the enchanter needs to disenchant (remove the enchantment) from existing items.
The Guild's Bank is usually also present or available to deposit items or to request items.
The meeting usually runs for an hour. After which, there's usually a scheduled questing event. This week's known questing event is a trip to the Scarlet Monastery, for Level 32 (ish) to 42ish. However, your hardworking Guild Officers will be on hand to organize other groups for smaller quests. If you're having trouble finding a group or looking to start out in a group, make sure to come and to notify one of the Officers that you'd like to be placed in a group.
Friday evening's also a good time, if you're a full Guild Member to visit the Guild web site and vote on the weekly batch of initiates. Voting usually opens on Thursday and runs until Sunday. For your quick access pleasure, there's a link to this week's voting on the left-hand side of the main WoWKindness.com site.
I hope we'll see you there!

Wiki Downtime Thursday
Update 12:35: The wiki is back up.
Our wiki will be down for a bit between 11:00 and 13:00 GMT on Thursday, March 24th, 2005, while I upgrade the software to the newest version. While it's down, you will be unable to login or view any content. Some content on the main WoWKindness.com page may also be missing, like "Questing", "Recent Blog Postings", "Recent Kindnesses", etc. as those are filled by a feed from the wiki. We apologize for any inconvenience.
This message will be updated when the wiki is back up.

Swap Meet Location Moved
After some comments about problems with the general channels around the Ironforge Auction house being too busy, we're moving the venue for the weekly swap meet to the Stormwind Bank instead. The meeting time, however, stays the same: Fridays @ 20:00 GMT, with a major instanced dungeon adventure to follow at 21:00.
The Swap Meet is the regularly scheduled time to meet with other members of the guild to gossip, exchange armour, receive potions for yourself or to distribute as random acts of kindness, etc. We'll see you there!

Tabard Up!
The weeks of deliberation are over. After some experimentation by Shalia,Valetta, and Elsheindra, a decision has been reached for our guild tabard. We've kept the drop motif but altered some of the colours as there was a problem with the actual in-game display of the colours and the logo. Check it out on Val, modelling to the right.
To get your own, you will need to visit a tabard vendor. You can find them in any of the capital cities which have guild halls: Darnassus, Stormwind, and Ironforge. It will cost you 90s.
Every drop of kindness generates its own ripples. That's WoW! Kindness!

Web Site Updated
As you've probably noticed, the main page of the web site has been updated. Check out our useful new side column giving quick access to some important areas of the web site for both members and potential initiates.
We've also added a new menu across the top, representing the different areas of our collaborative wiki/blogging space. Most of those will require that you login first. Your usernames are your character names and passwords are on their way to you either via /tell or via WoW mail. When you have your password, the START page is a good place to begin.
Not all of the Wiki has been organized yet. In particular, the Quest and Web/Wiki Admin areas are still under construction. Look for those to be up and operational in the near future. Everything else should be good to at least get a start on. Have fun and don't forget to participate in the two polls on content visibility for the Kindness Blog Entries and regular Blog Entries.
