Basil and I are trying to buy a house around London. We made an offer this weekend, which the owners have agreed to. The next step is to get a mortgage in principle to cover the cost of the house and do the legal bits like getting it surveyed and checking titles, etc.

This is a big step. This is a scary step! EEEPPPPP! Send best wishes and donations of £20k ASAP, thanks!

Some Pictures
(view as slideshow)

Bedroom 1: A view of part of the master bedroom. The wardrobe cupboard on the left is built into the wall. There are cupboards over top and and a matching set of double wardrobe cupboards on the other side of the bed.   Living Room 2: The other half of the living room. Kari's standing near the doorway from which the first living room picture was taken.

A partial view of the open wooden staircase going up to the 2nd floor.   Living Room 1: Half the living room. The other half is out of sight.

Garden 1: Taken from the back of the large part of the back garden -- that's Kari and me hiding behind him. The conservatory door to the back garden is off to back right there.   The cooking half of the kitchen. The other half is the dining area and window (out of sight).

The jacuzzi bathtub in the upstairs bathroom.   Garden 3: The smaller part of the back garden around the side of the conservatory.

Here's the dining space in the other half of the kitchen.   Garden 2: Taken from the opposite end of the large part of the garden, so this is the same space as the first back garden picture but from the other end.

The main bathroom with the jacuzzi bathtub.   Most of the conservatory.

Bedroom 2: One of the "spare" bedrooms.   Bedroom 1: A view of the built-in dresser on the other side of the master bedroom. It is a bit of a tight squeeze between the bed and the dresser with a king size bed in there.

The front of the house on the outside.

Best of luck getting the new house - the cats are looking forward to an entire room becoming a kitty castle

Well, the offer has been formally accepted now. So we're moving forward on this big, scary journey. Schnurbart and I are going to visit the area around the house in a bit. Maybe we'll take some pictures and post them.

Keep us posted

1 tip go to the area at different times of the day so you can see if kids hang around etc

We talked quite a bit with the people who own the house. They were very happy to tell us a lot about the area. It's mostly inhabited by elderly people and single people.

However, we have been going back on different days of the week and at different times. Schnurbart and I took a trip over there yesterday in the late afternoon.

Woot! Good news today! We've been waiting two+ weeks for progress on either of the two applications we put in. The independent financial advisor called today and said that one of them was basically all agreed, subject to the valuation/inspection being satisfactory.

It sounds like it's really going to happen. I'm so... happy!

I've uploaded some of the pictures from the real estate listing for the house. Schnurbart wandered all over the place taking pictures, so I'll upload some of those later.

Since my last update, we've had the house surveyed and valuated, and we just received the formal mortgage offer today, so things are looking really good!

I've added some more pictures that Schnurbart took when I took him and Kariandra to the house to do some measuring.

OK, and a few more pictures for good measure. (-:

Our poor kitchen is going to be subjected to Auburn Falls #4 (soft sheen/semigloss):

where that weird light brown colour is now. The top part will be White Cotton (soft sheen):

The master bedroom is going to be in shades of blue. Azure Sky (AKA Bermuda Cocktail) #4 (soft sheen) for the walls:

and Azure Sky #6 (matte) for the ceiling:

The living room is fairly boring at the moment, with the walls in Pale Sienna (heritage colour as a soft sheen):

and the ceiling in White Cotton (matte):

Oo! The decorator just called to say the ceiling's been done in the living room if I wanted to check the colour to see if we like it or not. Off I go!

Ah, the White Cotton looks fine on the ceiling and the decorator guy's done a really nice job of filling in gaps between coving and ceiling and between skirting board and wall. Wheeeee!

Nice colours, Elsh!

Is that a pink shade I spot for the living room? :o

Thanks for showing your painting ideas in such detail, can't wait to see them in person some day.

I'll book you in for next week. I need help unpacking and sorting. (-:

PS: Now we have no working phone service but Internet is working oddly enough.

/Binky thinks the patio will make for good sunning

I think Binky would enjoy snoozing in the lil cave underneath the flight of stairs too.

How's the painting coming along?

The little "cave" under the stairs is now filled with the energy-efficient dryer. There's only a little cat-sized gap left, so I'm not sure Binky would be all that comfortable there.

The painting of the three rooms is done. All that's left is to remount the curtains in the living room space and clean up the painting supplies all over my kitchen. I should be able to move the bed into the bedroom later today and stop sleeping on the living room floor!

Alas, we still have no working phone line in the building and no Internet either. At least it's improving, though. Instead of getting "You have dialed an incorrect number" when we call ourselves, now it just rings ... somewhere. BT in a fit of helpfulness notified our Internet provider that the phone line was moving so our Internet provider closed our account for us! No Internet at the old place either. I'm online using my cell phone and laptop, downloading 15,500 messages by dial-up at £1.00/day for "unlimited" Internet. I'm waiting to be cut off for unreasonable use. :-P

After a major false start where we didn't have a working thermostat at all, not even the original one, the guys managed to get the Heatmiser PRT installed and it's now working. One problem down, hundreds to go! (PS: Don't forget to admire the lovely EinBlue backlight on it and it's remote controllable too!)

A new double futon, custom-made with a duck egg blue cover, has arrived to replace the original 8-inch thick futon mattress for the living room futon couch. It's now sitting on top of the old one on the living room floor as none of the futon frames have been assembled yet. The only thing things assembled have been bookshelves (5 new ones!), a side table for the kitchen to hold a transformer and all the appliances, and a bed /couch/storage combo in the spare bedroom. Yes, Kari was sleeping on a bed, in a bedroom, with a door, while Basil and I slept on the living room floor!

The Hemnes Daybed Frame that's a couch, bed, and storage space. Kari slept on this in the spare room.

Billy corner bookcase similar to what we installed, except there's only one shelf on the left side of the corner and 2 full-size shelves on the right side of the corner.

Norden occassional table in our kitchen, which runs along the exterior wall and holds the transformer to power my North American rice cooker and crockpot and acts as storage for cookbooks and other kitchen appliances.

Kari got to sleep in a bed, it still felt like a giant crib for babies.. all it was missing was the bars down the side Kari-crib, was cozy though

I heard you're lucky it didn't have bars or you would have been chained to the bars. :-P

Sunning in all that British rain?

Actually, I heard that with the Pound not going very far on the Continent, many British are planning on remaining in the UK for the summer and are optimistic it will be sunnier than last year. That will probably suit Basil as I've heard a rumour he has BBQ plans for our back patio.

Ooh BBQ! and fence painting good call

Update: We finally have a working phone line! Alas, no Internet broadband for somewhere between 5 to 10 business days thanks to BT getting our existing contract closed. Bah. It's all an improvement, though.

Update 2: We slept last night for the first time in a bed, off the floor, in the new house. Yes, our bedroom is finally finished so I was able to put the bed together and sleep in it. It's all serenely blue. I'll have to get SchnurPictureBot™ to visit and take new pictures.
