General Dungeon Info

Location: Sunken Temple (Swamp of Sorrows) - Temple of Atal'Hakkar
Quest Levels: 43-55
Abbreviation: ST/TAH

Rumour has it this is a swoopy place for hunters and others with much better loot than Maraudon or Zul'Farrak, especially if you're a cloth wearer. There are class-specific quests for mages, hunters, and priests, with some good stuff, too. So pick up your pre-quests and get to it. You'll find the Sunken Temple (AKA Temple of Atal'Hakkar) on the eastern side of the Swamp of Sorrows.

The Quests (By Level)

  • L43 In Search of the Temple. Pick this up from Brohann Caskbelly in Stormwind and he'll send you on a quest to locate the Temple. This quest is finished without actually entering the instance and it's step 1 of a six-part chain that will eventually lead you back into the Temple. The next piece is L43 To the Hinterlands.
  • For Priests, L50 Blood of Morphaz is Step 4 of a four-part, class-specific chain, again involving Morphaz, the Green Drake, from the mage and hunter class quests. Pick up this quest from Oztink (Azshara) and return it to Greta Mosshoof at the Emerald Sanctuary (Felwood) to reward yourself with one of three blue items: wand, trinket, or ring.
  • L51 The Stone Circle is Step 2 of a four-part chain. The first part is L51 The Sunken Temple. Get that from the Witch Doctor Uzer'i (Feralas), near the main road around Camp Mojache, and return it to Marvon Rivetseeker (Tanaris), located about halfway between the Abyssal Sands and the Caverns of Time, south of Gadgetzan. Marvon will then give you the Stone Circle quest. When you're done that, next up is L51 Into the Depths to find the Altar of Hakkar in the Temple and use the Stone Circle on it.
  • L51 Secret of the Circle is closely related to the L51 Stone Circle in the four-part chain and is also picked up from Marvon Rivetseeker, located about halfway between the Abyssal Sands and the Caverns of Time, south of Gadgetzan. It ends when you find the Idol of Hakkar in the Temple.
  • L52 Haze of Evil. This quest has you collecting something from the various oozes in the Hall of Serpents in the Temple. It's actually the Step 3 in a chain of previously unrelated quests. Note: you don't need to go through the instance portal to finish this.
  • For Hunters, L52 The Green Drake can be picked up from Ogtink (Azshara). This gives a good choice of five blue items, including a pole arm, headgear, and three trinkets. However, it is Step 4 in a four-part, hunter-specific chain. The green drake is the same creature as Morphuz, part of the mage's class quest.
  • For Mages, L52 Destroy Morphaz can be picked up from the Archmage Xylem somewhere in Azshara. This is Step 3 of a three-part, class-specific chain. The green drake from the Hunter's quest is also the drake you're after to gain a blue fire ruby, glacial spike dagger, or +6 intellect neck pendant.
  • L53 Jammal'An the Prophet. Pick this up from the Atal'ai Exile at Shadra'Alor (Hinterlands – around 34,75). You'll need to set aside plenty of time to complete this, because it's a doozy. Jammal'An is located in the large easternmost room at the top of the right-hand staircase (when you're facing the instance entrance). You can't in there because there's a forcefield. To remove the forcefield, you need to travel around the main level and, at six equispaced points, kill a named mini-boss. If you miss a mini-boss, the forcefield won't drop. The head goes back to the Atal'ai Exile. Your reward is either blue mail headgear or blue cloth pants.
  • L53 The God Hakkar is Step 4 of a four-part chain. You need first to pick up the Egg of Hakkar from Yeh'kinya in Steamwheedle Port (Tanaris). When you've filled the egg, it goes back to Yeh'kinya and you get a choice of blue plate head gear, a blue dirk, or a blue intelligence- and spirit-heavy (plus agility and stamina!) cloth head circlet thingy. Rumour has it that it's possible to do this without doing the rest of the stuff at the same time.
  • L55 The Essence of Eranikus is picked up inside the instance from the Shade of Eranikus who drops a quest-starting trinket. Eranikus is a dragon. Rumour has it that you need to get rid of Jammal'An first and kill all the dragon kin and then kill Eranikus. When you get the trinket drop, turn it into the font in the same chamber.

The Quests (By Chain)

Grey italicised quests start/finish outside the dungeon instance or aren't
around the dungeon instance.

Transportation

How to get there. See also Transportation Links for flight paths and boat routes.

From Nethergarde Keep: Head north of Nethergarde Keep and then east.

From Darkshire: Head east of Darkshire.

Hints and Tips

  • The Pocket Guide to the Sunken Temple with a walkthrough and other information.
  • A map of the Sunken Temple, compiled by someone else.
  • For the God Hakkar, after you activate the egg at the altar, you need to ensure that no more than one dragonkin (who don't attack unless you attack them at this point) tries to "tame" Hakkar or the quest will fail and you'll have to reset the instance. Killing some of the creatures that appear after egg activation will give some blood when looted. You need to take the blood and extinguish the flames in the corner of the room, except the last one, until you're ready.
  • After you turn in the "Filled Egg" for the God Hakkar, if you talk to Yeh'kinya again, he'll give you a "spell" to reinvoke the avatar of Hakkar. Not sure how this is useful yet!

Exploits

  • September 19, 2005: Swiftsong (L51 Hunter), Elsheindra (L51 Healer), Frya (L53 Rogue), Dimage (L57 Hunter), and Sonarakbadak (L55 Hunter) whooshed off to the Temple, but victory was not to be theirs. Instead, they had one party wipeout and only finished the "In Search of the Temple" quest. A rematch is definitely needed!
